Oh, The Places You'll Go

Popular Saturday morning art program prepares students for a creative future

Chances are you know someone who attended the Saturday morning art program at Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD). The popular program, serving students in grades 1-12, has been in existence for 128 years. Not all go on to be famous painters, sculptors, or illustrators—but those Saturday mornings resonate in their minds regardless of their profession.

"I have former students coming up to me all the time telling me how the Saturday morning art classes changed their lives," explained Cat Sheridan, continuing education manager for Columbus College of Art & Design. "They can remember which rooms they were in, the projects they completed. It really had a lasting effect on them."

Sheridan herself attended classes on Saturday mornings. She then earned her degree from CCAD and after working in the art world for a few years has returned to the place she loves.

The program, open to grades 1-12, focuses on exposing students to many different materials and techniques. CCAD offers two 10-week terms during the school year. The program is modeled after the college foundation program and stresses creativity, individualism, and imagination. The courses are taught by CCAD faculty and local art professionals.

CCAD provides both need and competition based scholarships to students with a passion for art.
