Clean Fuels Ohio (CFO), a leading advocate for reducing the dependence on petroleum-based fuels and increasing the use of cleaner fuel and vehicles across the state, is spearheading a program aimed at improving the environmental performance of corporate and government fleet vehicles. Ohio Green Fleets, launched in 2008, works closely with businesses and government entities to offer assistance in choosing fuels, vehicles, and technologies that reduce emissions and improve air quality.

“The Ohio Green Fleets program was created to educate and assist companies and the government about strategies to improve a fleet’s environmental performance,” said Sam Spofforth, executive director for Clean Fuels Ohio. The program focuses on businesses that retain a fleet of 10 or more vehicles. CFO works closely with fleet managers to develop customized plans and then provides hands-on support in reaching milestones.

One important element of the program is a statewide rating system to recognize fleets that have completed certain requirements to reduce emissions. Based on a star system, fleets can achieve one- three- or five-star status. Fleets that surpass the requirements are certified and permitted to use the Ohio Green Fleets logo on their vehicles.

“One real strength is this program holds fleets accountable,” Mr. Spofforth said. “They must achieve real reductions to be certified.”

Ohio Clean Fuels, headquartered in Clintonville, was originally a program of the Columbus Health Department. In 2002, it became an independent nonprofit organization. The organization works statewide with public and private entities to promote the use of cleaner American fuels and vehicles and energy-saving transportation technologies. It is funded through private and government grants, as well as industry support. In addition, CFO has a growing membership community
