Recreation Unlimited campers are reaching new heights—literally. The organization, serving individuals with disabilities through sports, recreation, and education, unveiled its new 20,000 square-foot Life Center in July 2008, complete with indoor climbing wall. The Life Center includes a gymnasium, multi-sensory room, environmental center, classrooms, and an assembly room.

“The Life Center was a major component not built as part of the original campus back in 1989,” said Paul Huttlin, executive director and CEO. “It is very fulfilling to see this dream come to reality, built on time, on budget, and debt free.”

The new Recreation Unlimited Life Center, featured in our summer 2008 A Call to Action publication, was funded thanks in part to a grant by the Foundation. Donors responded as well, contributing $1,950 to help support the completion of the project.

Located in Ashley, Ohio, the Center will help Recreation Unlimited achieve their goal of offering camps and programs to individuals on a year-round basis. Mr. Huttlin estimates the Life Center will allow them to serve an additional 500 campers with disabilities and health concerns. Activities in the new space include cooking in the Life Skills room, campers with autism utilizing the multi-sensory room, classrooms being used for crafts and games, and the gym serving as home to volleyball, badminton, bowling, basketball, dance, and indoor climbing.
