Grantmaking Focus

The grantmaking of the Ingram-White Castle Foundation (IWCF) reflects the interests of both the Ingram Family and White Castle System, Inc., as its name suggests.  Although IWCF is primarily interested in supporting projects in the field of education, the foundation's mission is much broader.

The Foundation supports programs that:

  • Serve disadvantaged students and help them achieve academic success;
  • Help prepare students for the world of work;
  • Strengthen educational institutions; and
  • Address critical human service needs.

Priority is given to those projects that:

  • Encourage matching gifts or additional funding from other donors;
  • Yield substantial benefits to the community for the resources invested; and
  • Promote cooperation among agencies without duplicating services.

Generally, grants are not made for religious purposes, budget deficits, conferences, or projects that are normally the responsibility of a public agency. Support is generally given for one year. Grants are made primarily in the central Ohio area.

Grant Application Instructions

The Ingram-White Castle Foundation has two grantmaking deadlines per year: first working days of January and August. The online Letter of Intent (LOI) Form is accessible beginning in November for the January deadline and in June for August deadline. Consult the events calendar for the actual deadline dates. Applicants are strongly encouraged to send an e-mail to Sandi Smith, senior Community Research and Grants Management officer for the Foundation, to present project ideas prior to submission of a LOI.

New Application Requirement

Beginning in 2009, a PowerPhilathropy Portrait will be required for Full Proposals.
Please note that a portrait is not required for LOI.

To create a PowerPhilanthropy Portrait for your organization, contact Joyce Ray or Erin Scott at 614/251-4000 or by e-mail.

After sumitting a LOI, only those applications that best fit the IWCF's grantmaking interests and are strongly competitive will be forwarded to the full proposal stage. The applicants that move to this phase of the proposal process will be notified of the full-application deadline via e-mail. Decisions for these full proposals are announced at the end of May and November. Only those applications following the official application process can be accepted.

For those unfamiliar with the foundation’s application process, you are encouraged to attend one of the grant workshops that are held throughout the year. These workshops offer an overview of the grant application processes for all supporting foundations and The Columbus Foundation. Consult the events calendar for specific dates and registration.
