All People’s Fresh Market
Community Development for All People
Your support will help Community Development for All People transform a former drive thru into the All People’s Fresh Market, providing free produce and perishables to thousands on Columbus’ South Side.
Nearly 23 percent of individuals living on our city’s south side are food insecure.
This spring, Community Development for All People (CD4AP) is championing a new expansion to address this problem, turning a former drive-thru liquor store on Parsons Avenue into a vibrant hub of health and wellness. Renovating this property, which is across the street from its current, smaller Fresh Market, will allow CD4AP to double its current delivery of fruits and vegetables and distribute more than 900,000 pounds of free produce each year.
“The idea that a drive through liquor store can become a place of health and wholeness is a great testimony and a metaphor for how neighborhoods, through specific objectives, can flourish.”
— Erin West, Healthy Eating and Living Director
Funds raised through this Better Together project will help with renovation plans that include both internal and external building improvements (new glass overhead door, HVAC, plumbing improvements, furnishings, equipment, exterior painting and repairs), as well as renovation of the surrounding parking lot into a community plaza (the addition of gathering space, garden beds, etc).
The organization will also take a 'Farm to Fork' approach by educating residents about community gardening, healthy cooking, and maintaining an active lifestyle.
The new location features an entire wall of refrigeration units, previously used for beer and wine, which will now cool fruits and vegetables. The produce distributed by the Fresh Market will be provided as an in-kind donation by Mid-Ohio Foodbank. Health education, cooking classes, and additional project supervision will be provided as in-kind donations by The Ohio State University, Columbus Public Health, Capital Nursing School, and AmeriCorps VISTA.
