Everyone has a seat at The Big Table® on October 11

Community members and local organizations encouraged to take part in day of community-focused conversations.

Columbus, OH (September 14, 2023)—The Big Table® is back on Wednesday, October 11 and registration is now open for individuals and organizations to take part in the conversation. Launched in 2016, The Big Table is an annual day of community-wide conversation designed to inspire authentic human connection and civic engagement. Through intentional dialogue, participants are encouraged to imagine the next steps toward a kind and just future for all.

Everyone has a seat at The Big Table, and anyone can participate either by signing up to host a Big Table conversation or by joining a public conversation. Dozens of public conversations will be taking place throughout the day on October 11, including at all 23 Columbus Metropolitan Libraries locations, seven YMCA of Central Ohio locations, The Columbus Foundation, and additional locations. Virtual conversations will also be available to the public.

“The Big Table is about bringing community members together to talk, listen, and learn from one another,” said Kate Oliphint, Director of the Center for HumanKindness at The Columbus Foundation. “Socially connected communities are more trusting, resilient, prosperous, safe, and healthy. Being ready for the opportunities and challenges ahead starts with widening our circles and listening to understand our neighbors’ perspectives and experiences.”

In 2022, thousands of individuals representing 48 unique ZIP codes took part in The Big Table, meeting at local businesses, public parks, community spaces, and more. The most common Big Table conversation topics included affordable housing, mental health, transportation, welcoming New Americans, valuing diversity, the environment, and neighborhood-specific discussions, among other themes. Of those who joined The Big Table in 2022, 98 percent said they were likely to participate again.
