Columbus Dispatch Editorial: “Today is a Good Time to Give Back”

Central Ohioans have given thanks and likely given money to retailers during the kickoff to holiday shopping last weekend. Now, it’s time to give back as part of Giving Tuesday.

Today marks the fourth annual charity event, which seeks to encourage people to give to charity during a season when people are feeling generous. The “global day of giving,” originally created by New York City’s 92nd Street Y cultural center, now claims 30,000 partners in 68 countries.

Locally, the Columbus Foundation runs one of more than 40 civic and community campaigns tied to Giving Tuesday. Donors can give to any of the 600 central Ohio nonprofit groups listed in the foundation’s PowerPhilanthropy online marketplace at columbusfoundation.org, but it’s especially encouraging people to donate to its Gifts of Kindness fund. The fund gives grants to local charities that aid central Ohioans with the basics of food, clothing and shelter.
