Throughout their more than 50 years of marriage, Ann and Tom Hoaglin have lived in many places—Wooster, Ohio; Birmingham, Alabama; and Dallas, Texas, to name a few. Yet the Hoaglins always return to the place that feels most like home: Columbus.
“Columbus keeps drawing us back,” said Tom. “We have always loved living in Columbus.”
“Columbus is our anchor,” added Ann.
Tom, a native of South Charleston, West Virginia, built a distinguished career in banking, ultimately serving as Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Huntington Bancshares until his retirement in 2009. Ann, originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, served as a budget analyst for the State of Ohio and worked in product development and market research at Rubbermaid. She subsequently did graduate work in clinical psychology.
For Ann and Tom, giving back is a core tenet of their lives, reflected in their lifelong commitment to public service.
“Getting involved in the community has always been part of our makeup,” explained Ann.
Ann has dedicated her time and talent to several central Ohio organizations, including serving on the boards of Columbus Metropolitan Library and I Know I Can. She is also an Honorary Trustee and former Board President of the Columbus Museum of Art, where she co-chaired one of the museum’s largest fundraising campaigns.
Tom, meanwhile, has chaired the boards for OhioHealth, the Columbus Chamber, and the Columbus Downtown Development Corporation. A former Board Member of the Columbus Partnership, Tom also served on the boards of American Electric Power, The Gorman-Rupp Company, and The Jeffrey Company. He now volunteers at the Broad Street Food Pantry and as a driver for LifeCare Alliance’s Mealson- Wheels program, delivering meals to homebound neighbors.
“It’s easy to be engaged if you want to be,” said Tom. “The problems are there, but you can get involved and help address them.”
Ann and Tom are also deeply involved in their alma mater, Denison University—the place where they first met. Tom served on the university’s Board of Trustees for more than 20 years, including as Chair. In 2022, thanks to a generous gift from the Hoaglins, Denison University opened the Ann and Thomas Hoaglin Wellness Center, a health and well-being facility that provides medical care, counseling, and wellness education to students, staff, faculty, and the surrounding community.
Wanting to ensure their support for the community continues beyond their lifetimes, the Hoaglins worked with The Columbus Foundation to create a planned gift. In 2025, they also established the Ann and Thomas Hoaglin Fund, a Donor Advised Fund that allows them to actively champion the causes closest to their hearts today, such as the arts, education, public libraries, mental health, and social services.
“As we thought about what happens after our lives, why not have money overseen by an organization that understands the changing needs and priorities in the community, a community that we really love,” said Tom.
Through their leadership and generosity, the Hoaglins have built a legacy of service rooted in gratitude for the place they call home. Their thoughtful giving—combined with their dedication to the community—will strengthen the central Ohio region for generations to come.
